The Plus Size Clothing Nightmare

I’ve worn plus size clothing most of my adult life. And let me tell you, clothes shopping has really been an agravating experience to say the least. You go to the mall and visit the one store that carries sizes more than 1X. You browse the racks and find a nice pink blouse you’d really love to buy, and they DO have plus sizes, but YOUR SIZE PINK BLOUSE IS MISSING. ARRGH!

Or, you might find a pretty black bra that you’d love to have, but they are out of the 42DD. Pure frustration.

At first glance it looks like the big and beautiful store has a lot of items, but when you take into account that each item probably is displayed with 4-6 sizes, there really isn’t that much in one store. Even the big chain stores like Target, Walmart and K-Mart really have a limited supply of plus size clothing. And most of it isn’t very stylish.

And why do all other stores always put the women’s plus size clothing section right next to the Maternity section? I’m offended by that as a large woman, and I’d be offended by that as well if I were a pregnant woman. You have to make sure that you aren’t checking out the clothing that belongs in the maternity section.

Speaking of maternity wear, I know from personal experience that finding maternity clothes as a larger woman is murder! I seems that only the skinny girls get pregnant as far as the clothing manufacturers think. You have to find a special store that carries nothing but plus size maternity clothing, and lots of it.

To add to the frustration, they put the Petites section on the other side of the Women’s section. Come on…no big woman wants to shop next to all those perky little skinny girls.

It’s all so darn frustrating. But there is a solution. Shop online. More items, and more sizes, and total freedom to choose in your own home. An online store doesn’t have space restrictions and can display a thousand items with relative ease.

That’s easier said than done. Some online plus size women’s clothing stores carry a limited line. You have to visit many online shops to find what you want. It’s hard to find an online plus size fashion site that offers bigger size shirts, pants, suits, etc., from many designers and retail stores. An online plus size clothing store can pick clothing from many suppliers and designers, and make plus size fashions available at all price ranges. It can offer plus size lingerie, plus size boots, plus size coats and plus size swimwear. And it can stock a limitless selection of products, and sell them all in one place.

Sure, there are one or two large scale (excuse the pun) plus size shops online, if you can find them. Still, online shopping is definitely the way to go for us plus size women!

Preparing for Pregnancy

Unfortunately, many women are already two weeks pregnant by the time a missed period confirms it. But, by making early preparations you can give both yourself and your baby the very best chances of a successful pregnancy and healthy baby.

Getting Pregnant
Before getting pregnant, think about whether there are any hereditary medical or family conditions that need to be considered.

Contraception
If you have been using any form of contraception you will obviously need to stop!

You are most likely to conceive if you have intercourse around 5 days before you ovulate. And many doctors advise having sex 2-3 times a week throughout your cycle to stand the best chance of conception.

Lifestyle Changes
Both potential mums and dads should take extra care of their diet and lifestyle when they are considering having a baby.

If either or both of you smoke or drink, you should ideally cease altogether or at the very least cut down drastically.

Dietary Changes
Improve your diet. It is important to build up a good store of vitamins and minerals before you get pregnant.

Body Weight
Even if you are not yet pregnant, you still risk high blood pressure and diabetes if you are overweight. Lose excess weight carefully by following a calorie-controlled diet and exercising regularly, not by taking appetite suppressants.

Stress
Stress can be detrimental to both mother and baby as it can cause high blood pressure and even spontaneous labour in some cases.

Caffeine
Although there is lots of conflicting advice about how much caffeine is safe, it is generally believed that moderate consumption is fine. You may want to cut down if you drink a lot of coffee or other caffeine- rich drinks, especially in the early weeks.

Folic Acid/ Folate
Women are often advised to take 400 micrograms of folic acid supplements from twelve weeks pre-pregnancy until twelve weeks into the pregnancy. Folic acid is also found in dark leafy green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli as well as oranges and enriched breakfast cereals and wholemeal bread.

Hazards at Work
Unfortunately some working environments can lead to fertility problems or even pose a risk to the developing baby. Workplaces that may be a risk include those that work with some chemicals, X-rays, lead and anaesthetic gases.

Finally, if you think carefully about the new life you will be bringing into the world, and make the necessary changes to your lifestyle and diet, then at least you know you are giving your longed-for baby the very best chances of developing into a healthy human being.

And you can enjoy your pregnancy in the knowledge that you have done your very best. Good Luck!

Eight Keys to Heat Up a Cool Relationship for Valentines Day

1. CELEBRATE VALENTINES DAY EVERY DAY: Love is a practice. Say I love you in the morning and at night… more is better.Share with one another the things that give you the greatest pleasure and help one another’s dream come true. For example if you partner loves music, bring home CDs or tickets to concerts often. If your partner loves football watch with him on a regular basis. Remember these are GIFTS and are done without resentment;you are dream-makers. A good relationship is like good sex—both partners give and receive what they want.

2. HEAT UP THE BEDROOM: Since most men are visual, they appreciate lingerie.Women tend to need to be “talked up” during the day. However, everyone is different so you need a love map to one another.

3. MAKE CONNECTIONS: Research shows that happy couples connect often with their eyes, soft voice ,body language. Cool couples have habitual ways they distance. Communicate connection. Use soft eyes when you look at your partner and touch often.

4. LIVE PASSIONATELY AND NOT JUST FOR PASSION: A wise Native American once said, “As you go the way of life you will see a great chasm. Jump… It is not as wide as you think.” If your life is cool, how can your relationship stay hot?

5. IN LOVING THE SPIRITUAL IT IS DIFFICULT TO DESPISE THE EARTHLY. Develop a spiritual practice together. You can use prayer, inspirational readings, meditation. Offer gratitude to one another by sharing one thing you appreciate about your partner before you go to sleep. This practice builds a positive emotional bank account. Spiritual practice generates warmth that heats up the relationship.

6. DON’T JUST SURVIVE,VISUALIZE: Visualize your dream relationship. Close your eyes and feel the warmth and connection. Affirm what you want. Our unconscious mind is filled with negative thoughts. Retrain your brain. Many people never saw a model of a hot relationship so they need lots of visualization practice. A famous neuroscientist observed, “In the brain, practice makes permanent”

7. WE CANNOT STOP LIFE’S SORROWS BUT WE CAN CHOOSE JOY: Mother Theresa said, “Our best protection is a joyful heart” Have fun together. Act like kids. Masters and Johnson observed good sex is like two children under the sheets.

8. WAKE UP WITHOUT MAKE-UP: We cannot have true intimacy unless we drop our masks.Live every day like Valentines Day instead of Halloween!

As William Blake attests,” men and women are not alien creatures….we all want the same things”. Positive touch is so important it helps people love longer, decrease blood pressure, and improve the immune system. Renee Spitz was the first to identify that although babies in orphanages were fed and changed if they weren’t held, they’d die.

Dr. Linda Miles has been a psychotherapist for over thirty years and is determined to share many of the things she has learned. She had seen countless couples who behave in a cold and indifferent way to one another because they lack the skills to keep the fire burning. If they could have life-affirming, “lived” experiences instead of celebrating what is dead, their disagreements would seem trivial and the distance cold and lonely. She offers these keys to more meaningful connection.

Dr. Linda Miles is deeply committed to helping individuals and couples achieve rewarding relationships. She is an expert with a doctorate in Counseling Psychology, and has worked in the mental health field for over thirty years. She has been interviewed extensively on radio, TV, and in newspapers and magazines. Find more relationship ideas and relaxation techniques on her web site and in the award-winning book she co-authored, The New Marriage: Transcending the Happily-Ever-After Myth, and Train Your Brain: For Successful Relationships, CD. http://www.drlindamiles.com.

Does Your Personal Style Reflect Your Uniqueness?

Does your personal style truly reflect your uniqueness? Do you feel comfortable in your own skin? Do you feel confident about what your look says about you? Do you gravitate toward just buying the fashion magazine’s latest look? Or are you constantly comparing how you look to others?

My life’s experience is that many women do not own their look. Many women do not embrace their uniqueness and instead create copycat, plain Jane or outlandish styles that aren’t reflective of whom they are.

I believe that any woman can evoke the look that simply confirms her being and uniqueness. She can look chic, feminine in accordance with her personality, lifestyle and very importantly, budget. Here are the steps I recommend you follow:

Step 1: Discover what your body type is and which styles look good on you. Kendall Starr in her book, Pocket Stylist, believes that regardless of whether a woman is average or plus sized, there is one of three basic silhouettes that apply to everyone. The three basic silhouettes are:

BODY TYPE A: The average version of a woman whose shoulders are narrower than the width of her hips. Regardless of whether she is flat- or full-chested, this torso proportion is defined by a definite visual difference between the width of those shoulders and the width of the hips.

BODY TYPE B: The traditional hourglass - although Farr herself isn’t in favor of geometry or fruit-derived monikers (”no hourglasses, apples, pears, celery or any of that stuff”) - this woman’s shoulder width is essentially the same as her hip width, and the waist is generally well defined. Bust size can be anywhere from flat-chested to full-breasted. (Again, simply a particular that refines her fit - not a starting point.)

BODY TYPE C: The shoulders are wider than the width of the hips. Broad-shouldered, narrow-hipped models fall into this category. Her waist is usually quite straight, and can be somewhat of a fitting challenge. Once you’ve determined your body type, go to a store with an honest friend. Try on various fabrics and cuts to see how the material and shape emphasize or detract from your basic body silhouette. Remember, window shopping is okay, no need to break the bank and immediately overhaul your wardrobe.

Step 2: Inventory your wardrobe and make sure you have these wardrobe basics, which complement your silhouette and lifestyle:

Pants:

? Dark - Day Look In a simple, skimming cut and crisp high-quality fabric.

? Dark - Night Look Fuller leg in a lighter high-quality fabric.

Jeans or Chinos:

? To wear with a flat heel Hemmed shorter to wear with flats.

? To wear with heels Hemmed longer.

Skirts: ? Pencil, Trouser or A-Line Cut In black or lightweight wool.

? A-line or Bias Cut In a flowy fabric for day or evening.

? Skirt in a neutral, mixable style A subtle pin stripe or tweed.

Shirts:

? White button down In a feminine cut.

? White T-shirts Just the basic T, a boat neck, or V-neck.

Sweaters/Cardigans:

? Black That tonally matches your black pants.

? Neutral In a skin flattering tone, i.e. avoid stark white if you’re fair.

? Vivid Color Must emphasize your features and not detract.

Jackets

? Tailored It should match your dark pants in color tone and style.

? Casual Bombers, motorcycle styles and windbreakers are good choices in fabrics like leather, suede, corduroy, soft wool or cotton twill.

Coats

? Trench Good for the rain and in-between seasons - choose a neutral or black.

? Knee-length For in-between seasons.

? Winter Coat Invest in the best fabric you can possibly afford.

Dress or matching separates that create a dress. Always have a little black dress on hand.

Accessories

? Cherish four to five high-end fashion accessories (costume jewelry and scarves) that you wear all the time.

? Add one or two new trendy pieces each season and wear them out.

? Invest in high quality everyday leather handbags and shoes.

Become friends with a great tailor who can assure that these key clothing pieces flatter your uniqueness.

Step 3: Find a great hair stylist who is skilled at working with your hair type. Then get a fuss-free hairstyle and maintain it. I don’t know about you, but I absolutely dread having to use several hairstyling tools and products. It’s all about simplicity to manage my hair (flat crown and wavy length). I could be using tons of root lifter, hair serums, along with a blow dryer, flat iron, three brushes and then finishing products. However, I made a decision some time ago to embrace my hair texture and found a hair stylist who knows exactly how I “operate” and created a style accordingly.

Step 4: Treat your skin as the treasure it is. Get a facial every month or just give yourself a weekly facial. Maintain, protect and nourish your skin daily. If you have great skin, you radiate and barely need any make-up. The time spent on your daily skin care routine is also a wonderful time to dedicate to yourself and regeneration. Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water to hydrate it.

Step 5: Use make-up as an aid to emphasize your beautiful features, not hide them under layers and layers of coating. I firmly believe in the principle applied by French women: less is more. Your basics include: tinted moisturizer with SPF, a light powder, blush, a great mascara and a lipstick or lip gloss. Select colors that are complementary to your skin tone, hair color and eye color. Heavy smoky eye make-up or bright red lips may look great in a magazine. However, if they don’t reflect your uniqueness - leave them in the store!

Let your imagination and creativity take its power to truly reflect your uniqueness. So, when someone asks you: Does Your Personal Style Reflect Your Uniqueness? You’ll answer confidently: Absolutely!

Proper Bra Sizing: What Every Woman Should Know

Most women do not wear the correct bra size. With monthly water retention cycles, dieting, and general aging, it also should not be assumed that the size you were two years ago is the same size you are today (or that a bra can be worn that long, for that matter). Even a change of 5 pounds can change your bra size. This guide will help you to properly measure your bust, so that you can find the size for you.

While most shops will have a salesperson to assist you in proper measurements, in order to buy sexy lingerie from a catalog, it is important to know your size.

How To Know If Your Current Bra Does Not Fit

The back rides up. This may mean that the cups are too small, or the band is too tight. The front of the band is too tight to get a finger under it. This means you need a larger band.

The bra cups should be entirely filled, or you may need a smaller cup. If, on the other hand, the cups are overflowing, you may need a larger cup or a different style of bra.

If the underwire digs in, you may need a larger cup size. (Or your bra could just be very old. In either case, it’s time to replace it.) This could also be an indication that the side wings of the bra are not large enough.

Proper Measurements

First, you will need three measurements: under bust, upper bust, and full bust. For under the bust, measure directly under your bust. With all measurements, hold the tape secure but not too tight. For the upper bust, measure above the bust and below the arms.

If the difference between the under and upper bust is less than two inches, the under bust is your band size (round up to nearest even number). If the difference is more than two inches, add 2-3″ to the under bust measurement to get an even number and use this as your band size. For the full bust, measure around a fullest part of your breast. Make sure the tape is secure around the back.

Your cup size is determined by your full bust measurement - your upper bust measurement. If the difference is less than 1″, you are a AA, 1″ is an A, 2″ is a B, 3″ is a C, 4″ is a D, 5″ is a DD (or an E), etc.

Beyond Measurements

Of course, your measurements are just the beginning. There are other things to keep in mind when looking for a comfortable, yet sexy bra.

When trying on different bras, make sure that the area in between the two cups actually comes into contact with your chest. Do not make the straps support your breast alone! This will be very uncomfortable over long periods of time, the bra will wear out quickly, and the pressure on the straps can cause back problems.

If you are finding the band sizes to differ for a different brand, you may also need to change your cup size. Generally, as you decrease the band size, you will need to increase your cup size, while a larger band will call for a smaller cup.

Bra Styles

Different styles of bras have different fits. Beware the convertible bras: while they may sometimes work, it is rare that every possible style will work for your body.

Full Cup / Full Coverage - Designed for support, these bras cover the entire breast.

Half Cup / Demi Cup - These bras cover 75 percent of the breast. This is a sexy cut that increases cleavage, but make sure your breasts are not “cut-off” in the center. Your profile should still be smooth, and if it isn’t, you need a larger cup size.

Underwire Bras - These bras give the most support.

Racerback Bras - These bras have a crossover pattern in the back. They can have a front or back clasp, or can simply pull over the head. This is a common style for a sports bra.

Halter-Top Bras - As the name imply, these bras have a strap that loops around the neck, rather than the usual shoulder straps. These bras can increase cleavage, and can be worn with both halter tops and tops with low center coverage.

Backless Bras - While some backless bras literally have only front coverage, generally this refers to bras with extremely low backs, so that many dresses with low backs can be worn without the bra showing.

Strapless Bras - These bras have no straps at all, only the band. Some of these can cover the stomach area as well, and some even cover the body like a leotard. These longer strapless bras tend to stay in place better.

Padded Bras / Push-Up Bras - These bras have extra padding in the cups in order to give the illusion of a larger breast and/or to increase the cleavage. The padding can be made of the same material as the bra, foam, or gel. Gel is becoming more popular because of its more natural look. In some bras, the padding is removable.

Décolleté - These bras are lower cut than a demi bra, allowing you to wear something even lower cut without revealing your bra.

Light-Support Bras - These bras have no underwire. While you may be tempted to wear one to an all-day event, if you are larger than an A cup, you may not be getting the support you need. A properly fitted bra will be comfortable whether or not it has underwire.

Sports Bra - These bras are designed to minimize bouncing during athletic activity. While some inexpensive varieties do this by squishing your breasts, it is better to find on that is sized by cup sizes (as opposed to small, medium, and large) and get fitted as you would with a regular bra. Over the long term, this will increase your comfort.

Nursing Bras - For the convenience of nursing mothers, these bras have a snap on each of the shoulder straps, so she can easily remove them to feed the baby without taking off the entire bra. Generally, nursing bras are full-coverage for the added support a new mother needs.

Now you can order all your intimate apparel with confidence! So next time you find the perfect little black dress, you can be sure you will look your best

Putting Together the Perfect Halloween Costume

If you’re going to a costume party or some other event for Halloween, you probably want to really impress everyone with your costume. And the best type of costume is one that will really let you get into character - something that you feel proud to be wearing.

You can put together your own costume or buy one of the cheap ones that you’ll find at your local drug store, but to really go the distance and get a great costume it pays to get it through a professional costume store. Whether you rent it or buy it, you’ll be a lot happier with the results.

A good costume store won’t try to sell you more than you need. They’ll help you to find a costume that suits both your needs and your budget. They’ll also make sure you’re familiar with how to don the costume, and any other accessories or makeup that goes along with it.

To really make a splash at the costume party, you want to go all the way with your costume. Don’t cut corners and try to save a few dollars by going with something cheaper or not as complete.

Get all the accessories you’ll need - makeup, props, a quality mask, etc. Having the complete package will make your costume that much more realistic (and will make it that much harder for your friends to recognize who you really are!)

If you’re not sure exactly what accessories you’ll need, do a little research. Are you thinking of going as an elf from The Lord of the Rings? Watch the movies again to pick up all the details in the costumes.

Or perhaps you want to be a pirate this year? The Pirates of the Caribbean movies can give you a ton of good ideas for your costume.

Take the time to get all the details just right and you’ll be the talk of the party - even if nobody knows who you really are!

A Brief History of The Vibrator

Sometimes, misunderstood and revered, but secretly loved by its supporters, the vibrator has as colourful a history as the modern day models that sit proudly on the store shelves or the pages of websites, waiting patiently and offering the promise of pleasure to an eager purchaser.

Some are not too different in form and function from the earliest ones found, much to the embarrassment of archaeologists earlier this century.

Excavations of ancient civilizations unearthed stone objects that were clearly sculptures of penises. Probably used in fertility or religious rituals, these objects played an important role in their communities.

The ancient Greeks with their olive oil and phallic objects understood a little better than most and realised that if they went to war and they wouldn’t be around to satisfy their women, that they would develop a wandering uterus, so they would leave their wives with phallic shaped objects made of wood or leather to pleasure themselves until they returned. Naturally the olive oil came in handy as a natural and healthy lubricant for such devices.

These days vibrators are far more developed and their usage is certainly different to that prescribed in their unusual beginnings..or is it?

The historical documentation of their development is certainly an interesting story to note.

The first mechanical vibrator was invented in the late 1800’s by a British physician as a way to more efficiently perform a type of therapeutic massage on female patients.

First we must set the scene in the 1800’s with a society of well dressed gents and ladies in flowing gowns who carried parasols and certainly didn’t discuss pleasures of the flesh.

Imagine for a moment all these ladies parading around in their finery but hiding a deep mysterious affliction.

What was this affliction?

Apparently it was called “hysteria” a sinister type of madness. Hysteria was originally perceived as a disease, but what it basically boiled down to was sexually frustrated women suffering from an intense need or longing for an orgasm.

This forced repression began early on in the schools for young women where the matrons would glove the hands of their pupils at night in their dormitories to prevent them from their carnal desires to masturbate, anyone caught would have the further embarrassment of having their hands strapped to their beds while they slept.

To cure this affliction or Hysteria, doctors would manually massage women to orgasm in the hope of relieving them of this mysterious illness. No doubt it came as a huge relief when the first steam powered device was invented. Doctors all over Britain, suffering from repetitive strain injury, no doubt breathed a sigh of relief as now they would just have to stoke the small steam contraption and let it do the work for them.

Can you imagine how busy those doctors were!

One wonders how many women feigned hysteria simply to get to the doctors for some hands on relief!

Fortunately in the 1950’s this idea of hysteria was replaced by the theory that it was simply a revolt of the womans need for sexual liberation following periods of sexual deprivation. How many husbands were suddenly jolted by the realisation that the local GP had been masturbating their wives for them for years.

I would imagine there were a few doctors a little disappointed by the downgrading of this ‘disease’ as well!

Today, gone are the crude stone, wood and steam powered models. They come in different lengths, sizes, shapes and textures to more adequately replicate that which they are representing. Some have collections to perform different functions while couples may use them as an enhancement to their sexual lives.

Owning a vibrator is a sign that you are comfortable with your sexuality and that as a woman you don’t need to rely solely on another man to give you satisfaction. How could we compete as men with these battery operated or rechargeable wonders anyway. As hard as we try we have some stiff competition.

Plus Size Lingerie - Not Grandma’s Muumuu Anymore!

Rejoice ladies, the designers are getting it - larger women want clothes that are truly made for their size but that also look good and fit their lifestyle. And not just work clothes, or jeans and t-shirts, but sexy, expressive plus size lingerie too!

And it’s no wonder since women naturally know that clothing is a form of expression, of reflecting on the outside what you’re feeling on the inside. And there’s very little that speaks more loudly than lingerie!

But it’s not just sizes that have changed over the years. lingerie, of all sizes, has come a long way since being worn as “foundations” as our Grandmothers used to call them. In fact, their long ago functions often are not the reason behind wearing it at all these days.

I spoke to a friend of mine recently who despite not always being happy or comfortable with her larger size, shared an interesting thought with me about plus size lingerie, “when I wear good quality lingerie that fits me, that is actually made for my size, I feel sexier and in some ways more powerful. First of all, when I used to think about wearing lingerie, I would envision trying to stuff myself into something made for a very thin girl, like the fashion models in most of the pictures, and that was not appealing to me at all - and the image I had would not likely be appealing to anyone else for that matter! However, once I discovered that there is nice, quality lingerie that actually fits me, is cut and designed to really fit me and my curves, in all different styles, it was a different ballgame all together!”

She went on to say “I finally realized whether you are comfortable with your weight or are planning on losing, or for some people, gaining - this is the weight you are today and there is no reason that you shouldn’t express yourself right now, where you are, in all different ways - dress to enjoy your body - decorate it, embellish it, drape it in clothes you love and that make you feel good. Whether that’s a big, cozy sweatshirt today or plus size lingerie tomorrow. There are days that skinny girls don’t like their bodies either, or don’t like the way something fits them, I don’t think that’s something that is exclusive to big or small girls. But on the days when I’m feeling sexy or maybe needing a little help feeling sexy, I’m very glad there is plus size lingerie available that fits me well!”

“The best part is that it seems that the assortment of what is available just keeps getting better. There is now plus size lingerie in all materials from lace to leather and in all different styles including corsets, teddies, bustiers and babydolls. It’s great to have a whole variety to choose from - especially if you’re talking about expression. I mean let’s face it, satin and lace say one thing while leather lingerie says another altogether! I like it all - it’s fun.”
